Trader Joe’s Product Review: Ube Mochi Pancake/Waffle Mix
I’m a huge fan of Trader Joe’s and couldn’t help buying the Ube Mochi Pancake/Waffle Mix when I saw it at the store. Something I miss when I’m living abroad is Trader Joe’s. All of the workers wear Hawaiian shirts and the general vibe of the store is so cheerful and happy. I’m always impressed by their cool products and the interesting flavors from around the world. If you find yourself in the U.S. or if you’ve never been to a Trader Joe’s, I recommend a trip there!
My own personal review of the product:
This is in no way a sponsored post, I just felt like writing about trying out this interesting Ube Mochi Pancake/Waffle Mix. At first glance, I was intrigued by the two words mochi and Ube! Mochi is one of my favorite foods. It’s basically a glutinous rice that’s been pounded to form a sticky substance. In Japanese cooking, mochi is an important food during New Years celebrations. I’m not familiar with Ube but it is a kind of purple yam that is common in the Philippines. I was excited to try this out! Maybe in the future, it would be interesting to find out some new recipes using Ube.
Some things I particularly liked:
🧇Gluten-free – I thought this was a great option for those who can’t eat gluten. The end result was similar to waffles that are made with flour!
🧇Uses few ingredients – It was nice that the only ingredients needed were eggs, butter, and water. It would be handy to have in the kitchen for a waffle or pancake craving.
🧇Easy to make and versatile – It was surprisingly easy to make. There was no complicated mixing! It was also great that you can either make them pancakes or waffles, and whatever size you’d like.
Tanuki Family’s Thoughts:
I was back at home in North Carolina with I tried this mix with my family. Here was how they rated these waffles. Also one thing to note is that this mix made around three large waffles.

👨🦳7/10 Papa Tanuki
🐶10/10 Hana the Puppy
Overall, we all enjoyed the waffles! For me and papa Tanuki, there wasn’t anything extraordinary about them but they were still delicious! I felt like there wasn’t so much unique flavor from the Ube. I think it’s a great option for those who can’t eat gluten. Mama Tanuki really liked it and she said she enjoyed the texture of the mochi. Hana the puppy was especially enthusiastic about trying a few bites!
