Matcha Green Tea Rice Krispie Treats

Rice Krispie Treats with matcha are the perfect combo!ย

Rice krispie treats…. That bright blue wrapper and the crunchy and sticky deliciousness is so irresistible. It was one of my favorite childhood treats. Later on, I’d buy them from vending machines and convenience stores during college whenever I needed a mental pick me up or just a bit hungry.ย

๐ŸตWhy I added Matcha…

I like sweets but I’ve always preferred sweets that are on the less sugary side and so I thought matcha, powdered green tea, would be the ideal combination. It balances out the sweetness of the marshmallows perfectly.ย

For this recipe, I based the ratio of the ingredients from the “official” recipe from Kellogg. I simply added the matcha powder into the melted marshmallows before adding the rice cereal.

Ingredients

  • 15 grams butter
  • 4 cups (100 ml size cups) marshmallows
  • 1 teaspoon matcha green tea powder
  • 6 cup (100 ml size cup) toasted rice cereal

Instructions

  • In a pot melt butter on low heat
  • Once butter is melted, add the marshmallows and gently melt them.
  • When the marshmallow mixture has melted, add the green tea powder.
  • Mix well and as soon as the green tea powder is incorporated take off of the heat.
  • Add the toasted rice cereal and mix well so that the rice is coated in the marshmallow mixture.
  • Take out the rice cereal marshmallow mixture from the pot and press them into a mold. I just used empty plastic containers, but you can also put them into baking pans.
  • Let it sit to cool down. Then, take them out of the containers and cut the matcha rice krispie treats into whatever shape and size you desire!

๐ŸตAbout the matcha Ingredient:

Matcha is a powdered form of green tea. It is used during tea ceremonies in Japan and to make a more stronger green tea. I guess it’s like the “espresso” of green tea, much more concentrated than a normal green tea. These days matcha is added to so many things from matcha lattes, milkshakes, ice creams, etc… it can be a delicious flavoring for so many things. You can probably find it in Asian grocery stores and possibly health and organic stores. Here is also an amazon link in case you’re interested:ย
